Craigslist is fuelling the sex-for-rent scandal in Scotland, with the classifieds website continuing to promote sleazy advertisements despite an industry-wide crackdown. The company said that keeping the section open was too much of a risk. Another sex-for-rent post was published on the UK classifieds network Locanto.
Online competitors such as Gumtree have largely eliminated such adverts by recruiting moderators to filter out disreputable posts. As long as you take care of me I am happy to support you.
Last year a UK-wide investigation by The Times found that almost half of the adverts for spare rooms on Craigslist were demanding sex for rent but despite media attention and political outrage sincefour more were found in Glasgow and Edinburgh last week alone. In England, sex-for-rent adverts are illegal under the Sexual Offences Act A Crown Office spokesman said Scottish cases would depend on the individual circumstances of each advertisement.
It is understood that Craigslist has failed to respond to several requests to meet the Scottish government over the issue. The Scottish government is committed to tackling all forms of violence, especially against vulnerable groups. Their failure to do so is a disgrace.
Sites such as the flat-sharing platform Spareroom have intervened to filter out inappropriate posts. Police Scotland has been fielding complaints about sex-for-rent adverts since Craigslist did not respond to a request for comment. Subscription Notification.
