MILFORD -- Police conducting a sting operation at a Post Road adult book store arrested six men for allegedly either grabbing the genitals of male undercover police officers or exposing themselves to the officers.
The arrests came Friday and Saturday nights after detectives went undercover to follow up on a tip they received that illegal sexual activity was occurring at Romantix adult video store, Boston Post Road. Four of the six arrested are charged with fourth-degree sexual assault for allegedly grabbing the genital area of male police officers, police said.
Two men are charged with public indecency for allegedly exposing themselves to an officer, while one man is accused of doing both, police said. Romantix sells pornographic material and adult novelties and has viewing booths in back of the store where patrons can "preview" material.
The arrests occurred in the back of the store near the viewing booths, but police spokesman Officer Vaughan Dumas declined to say what led the alleged behavior to transpire. An existing city ordinance allows officials to close down an adult business that is deemed a public nuisance. Romantix remains open.
Romantix is a co-plaintiff with Keepers Gentlemen's Club in a federal lawsuit that alleges a strict city ordinance seeking to further regulate adult businesses is unconstitutional. The ordinance would require a 6-foot buffer between dancers and patrons. It also would require adults-only shops in Milford that have peep shows or viewing booths to no longer make that service available with a closed door and no lighting.
The ordinance, however, has not been put into effect pending the outcome of the federal lawsuit. The owner of Keepers Gentlemen's Club recently sent a letter to the city requesting the case be settled out of court. A copy of that letter was sent to local media.
Mayor James L Richetelli Jr. This is not the first time police have made arrests at Romantix. Dumas said a similar sting operation conducted about 10 years ago netted several arrests. Inthe store was robbed, and during the subsequent trial, it was revealed the defendant frequently engaged in sex with men in private booths there.
There are several personal posted on the Craigslist Web site that request sexual encounters in explicit language at various Romantix locations, including the Milford store. A store manager Monday asked a reporter to leave the store, and denied a request to inspect the viewing booths.
Requests for comment were referred to the corporate office. A message left at that office was not returned.
